A dictionary definition of hero
a : a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability
b : an illustrious warrior
c : a person admired for achievements and noble qualities
d : one who shows great courage
You might think of the super-heroes portrayed by the entertainment industry, Superman, Wonder-woman, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, the saviors of the Galaxy etc. But in my book, who are the real heroes - the unsung heroes?
The real heroes are the ones who work in the background. They dig wells for the poor, they persuade dentists or doctors to come to a third world country to spend some of their time treating the poor that otherwise wouldn't be getting any treatment.
Who are the heroes? The ones who find sponsors for water tanks and building materials or food and supplies for refugees or dispossessed who are unable by their condition to obtain those things.
Who are the heroes? Those who find jobs and so paperwork for immigrants, those who dig Wells and build houses for orphans and widows.
Who are the heroes, those who build schools and provide education to children who otherwise wouldn't get a chance?
Who are the heroes, the ones who give Bible classes and impart values for youth who would are tempted to be recruited into drug gangs and cartels.
Who are the heroes? The ones who day in and day out tend to the little things in the background, who cook meals, do shopping, cleaning, change diapers and teach the young.
Who are the heroes, those who run food kitchens and those behind the scenes who support and help in any way they can being big or small.
Who are the heroes, the Doctors Without Borders who go into war zones and treat people who have been subjected to bullet wounds, abuse, genocide and hunger.
These are the heroes. These are the unsung heroes.
Who are the heroes? The ones who build community and fellowship and camaraderie.
The ones who put on clown shows, and bring cheer to those who are downhearted. The ones who stand up and fight for the needy.
Who are the heroes, the ones who bring humanitarian aid from rich to the poor, who try their best to support those who otherwise wouldn't have anything.
Who are the heroes? The ones who share the love of Jesus.
Those with simple care and concern. Those who reach out to those who are sad and despondent. Who encouraged the weak, who visit hospitals. Who love their neighbors. Who speak up for peace? Who bring love and light to the sad and despairing.
Those are the real heroes.
